Learning
Outline
Chemistry is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are eager to explore the fascinating world of chemistry and develop a deeper understanding of its principles. Students will dive into topics such as molecular structures, bonding, and organic reactions, while receiving personal 2:1 tuition from expert tutors for an immersive, hands-on learning experience. The course will also offer insights into your tutor's specialist research areas, ensuring that all aspects of chemistry align with your academic interests and future aspirations. Whether you’re drawn to organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry, this course will help take your knowledge to the next level. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making it both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and a reflection session to track your progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been at the forefront of chemical discovery—from early studies of matter to breakthroughs that shaped modern medicine and industry. As part of the 16–17 Chemistry programme, you’ll live in a city defined by innovation and inquiry. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class laboratories and museums, and a tradition of experimentation that continues to transform how we understand the world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis, including breakfast and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, offering a variety of dining options.
The Experience
Chemistry reveals how the world works on a molecular level — from the materials we build with to the medicines that support modern life. In Cambridge, students explore core concepts such as bonding, reactions, energetics, and organic chemistry, while also examining how chemistry drives innovation in sustainability, pharmaceuticals, and technology.
Small, seminar-style classes (maximum eight students) give every learner the chance to analyse problems, debate scientific ideas, and apply theory to real-world challenges. Independent assignments are strengthened through personalised, tutorial-style feedback that sharpens understanding and communication. With structured social activities, life in a Cambridge college setting, and a diverse community of peers, students build confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for future scientific study. A completion certificate and personalised tutor recommendation support their academic ambitions ahead.
